  • The most basic issue with any pool fence is the height which must be at least 1200mm
  • You should also check the gap at the bottom of the fence - the maximum allowed is 100mm
  • Also check for 'stepping points' that may lower the effective height of the fence

  • Child drownings occur because of faulty gates, or gates that can be propped open
  • Pool gates must open out (away from pool) and be self-closing
  • The top of the pool gate latch must be 1500mm above the ground
  • Pool gate hinges can be considered a 'stepping point', lowering the effective legal height of the pool fence
  • The gap between the uprights of a pool fence can be no more than 100mm
  • Also check for 'stepping points' inside the pool fence such as pool furniture and pot plants
  • Any object within 300mm of the fence (inside or out) may be considered as a stepping point
